Area of responsibility
The Hygiene Manager is responsible for managing all aspects of site hygiene and sanitation to ensure compliance with food safety regulations, customer standards, and internal policies. This role leads the hygiene team, plans and verifies cleaning operations, drives continuous improvement, and plays a critical role in audit readiness.
Responsibilities;
- To manage, monitor and improve hygiene standards across the site and drive CAYGO standards
- Ensure effective day to day management of hygiene team in accordance with production hygiene requirements to maintain high standards of work across the factory
- Management of specific periodical hygiene tasks
- Plan and manage daily, weekly, and deep cleaning activities of production areas, equipment, and facilities.
- Management of all records of work undertaken and training requirements of hygiene team
- Create and maintain detailed cleaning schedules, work instructions, and hygiene SOPs.
- Management of stock control of hygiene goods and ordering of consumables where required
- Act as point of contact for any hygiene related audit requirements
- Ensuring stock management of PPE
- Requirement to be part of the extended food safety auditing team and to work closely with the QA team on day to day issues
- Full equipment strip downs and deep cleans
- Implement and maintain management information systems to aid the management of and reporting of Hygiene KPI's including Microbiological Standards, Effective Labour Utilisation, Stock control Management Systems, Budget Management and Cleaning Schedules
- Ensure compliance to the site Quality Management System
- Provide leadership and training for personnel to complete production line and facility cleaning
- Ensures efficient use of labour, chemicals, tools and equipment to ensure cleaning meets the requirements of the hygiene plan
- Ensures compliance to Occupational Health & Safety and Environmental Safety Programmes. In addition, provides a safe working environment and safe employees
- Ensures Continuous Improvement for hygiene at factory level
- Responsible for the hygiene and deep cleaning budget ensuring that the cost centre is controlled effectively.
- The role is site wide and includes responsibility for the in-depth cleaning of all food production machinery, all non food production equipment, storage equipment inc. structural surfaces including high-level overheads, pipes, lights & extraction systems
- Management of a hygiene team performing daily hygiene tasks and contractors performing more specialised cleans.
- The role also includes participation in site external audits and carrying out a number of site internal audits according to the technical schedule
- Monitor and verify cleaning effectiveness through inspections, swabbing (ATP, microbiological), and titration checks.
- Investigate hygiene-related non-conformances and implement corrective and preventive actions.
- Support internal and external audits by ensuring hygiene documentation and standards are audit-ready at all times.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives to optimize cleaning processes, chemical usage, labor efficiency, and downtime.
- Maintain hygiene performance reports and KPIs, communicating progress to management regularly.
- Collaborate closely with Production, Technical and Engineering Teams
- Assist the Technical Manager
Requirements;
- Proven experience working within a Hygiene Manager role, in food or drink manufacturing.
- A good communicator and relationship builder, capable of developing cross-functional relationships across the business.
- Good influencing skills, able to motivate others to improve performance.
- Hands-on, highly visible, and credible on the shop floor
- Good communication skills with a focus on English and Maths expected. Due to niche requirement of site, specific training should be expected and can be given where required
- Recognised Industry level training inc. COSHH, NEBOSH, IOSH, HACCP, Food Hygiene Certification
- Degree or Diploma level or hands-on experience based equivalent
